BC’s Ministry of Post-Secondary Education and Future Skills compiled a list of strategies for supporting post-secondary systems with digital learning in BC. This is available at https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/education-training/post-secondary-education/institution-resources-administration/digital-learning-strategy.
For this reflection I wanted to focus on a point that I think is the most important, modernization of Policies and Processes in education. This list covers 3 different areas: updating existing processed to address innovations; leverage organization’s capabilities to enhance digital technologies; making digital capabilities available to all.
Strategic Priority 1: Policies and Processes
Probably the most notable example of this point would be the COVID-19 pandemic. during this Post-Secondary institutes across the world had to refresh their digital literacy to support remote learning. The video conference application Zoom grew its customer base by 458% (Krome, 2023). As a student during this era, most of my classes were hosted over Zoom, and started to utilize technologies such as Brightspace or assessment. Initially this was daunting for many of my peers as these tools were never introduced to them.
This highlights how important it is for universities to update their Policies and Processes to modern standards, such as if another crisis occurs, students can resume their studies effectively.
Another important point is the concept of open education, I do believe learning benefits from being “open-source”, to allow for talented resources to contribute to. But a downside that is thankfully covered by this is Ethics, “open-source” can invite unwanted contributions from non-ethical sources, the Strategy suggestion of having a Guideline for Technology would address this.
